How do you tell if a mango is ripe?

Use your nose first. A ripe mango gives off a sweet, fruity aroma at the stem end — if it smells like a mango, it's ready. No smell usually means it needs a few more days; a sour or fermented smell means it's gone too far.

Then use gentle pressure. A ripe mango yields slightly when you cup it in your palm and press, like a ripe avocado or peach — not mushy, just giving. Colour is the least reliable signal: depending on the variety, a perfectly ripe mango can still be largely green, so don't judge by skin tone alone.

Why does naturally ripened mango taste better?

Mangoes are climacteric fruit — they continue to ripen after harvest as starches convert to sugars. When that happens slowly and naturally, the fruit develops its full aromatic complexity and balanced sweetness.

Mass-market mangoes are often harvested early and force-ripened quickly so they colour up uniformly for retail. They look the part but can taste flat, because the flavour compounds never fully develop. A mango that ripens on its own schedule — on the tree as long as possible, then on your counter — is simply a better fruit.

When is Alphonso mango season?

Alphonso (Hapus) season in western India runs roughly from late March through May, peaking in April. It's short — often just six to eight weeks — which is exactly why good Alphonsos feel special and sell out fast.

That natural scarcity is real. A grove yields a finite crop in a narrow window, and once it's harvested, that's it until next year. It's the clearest example of why a live, limited-stock model fits fruit so well.

How should you store and ripen mangoes at home?

Keep unripe mangoes at room temperature, out of direct sun, until they smell sweet and give slightly. To speed things up, put them in a paper bag — the trapped ethylene they release accelerates ripening. Once ripe, you can refrigerate them for a couple of days to hold them, but eat them soon for the best flavour.

Quick answers

Should mangoes be soft to be ripe?
Slightly soft — a ripe mango gives gently when pressed, but shouldn't be mushy. Combine the squeeze test with a sweet aroma at the stem end for the most reliable read.
Why are some mangoes green even when ripe?
Skin colour depends on the variety and isn't a reliable ripeness indicator. Many varieties stay green or partly green when perfectly ripe — judge by smell and give instead.
When can I buy Alphonso mangoes?
Alphonso season runs roughly late March to May, peaking in April. It's a short window, so harvests sell out quickly — join a waitlist if a drop is gone.
